An Exposé of Fall Fashion on Campus
Written by Giselle Swann
For a small school in Northern Michigan, Interlochen’s students have unique style. Fashion is a massive part of our campus community from fall and back to spring. As winter approaches, students are enjoying the last of the nice weather, and it definitely shows in what is being worn. But as the cooler air sweeps in, many students will be swapping their short sleeves for coats. In the past, fur coats, balaclavas, and moon boots have been all the rage, but what new trends are in the cards for this coming fall?
Kylee Henderson
Kylee Henderson, a senior Visual Arts major, opted for a white tennis skirt, dark blue long-sleeve shirt with white detailing, Adidas Sambas, a slick back, and gold jewelry. The style Kylee stepped out in today could be described by the popular internet term “Clean Girl.” This often features simple and natural makeup and hair, and outfits consisting of solid colors and classic fits.
Kylee’s takes on the current trends!
Kylee’s favorite fashion pieces include a good lowrise baggy pair of jeans and boots. Her go-to fit would be a pair of baggy jeans, with any tight top. On the other hand, she thinks that bows are going out of season, and that the newest trend of bubble skirts is not for her. Kylee’s fall essential for Interlochen is an oversized off-the-shoulder sweater. For inspiration for all of this, Kylee surfs through Pinterest. And to make her clothing wants come true, she often finds herself raiding her brother's closet and making his clothes stylish again.
Mabel Jennings
Mabel Jennings, a Music Production and Engineering senior, wore chunky sunglasses, a patterned fitted zip-up sweatshirt over a tee, fitted pants, and boots. Mabel’s outfit today was very 2000’s inspired. The layering and slimmer fit jeans are an excellent rendition and revival of an outfit you may see in the 2008 movie Twilight.
Mabel’s takes on the current trends!
Recently, Mabel has found herself a fan of button-ups, cardigans, skinny jeans, and boots. Within that genre she feels that Bandage dresses and the dirt look are coming up in popularity. Her go-to outfit has been dark-colored clothing, with usual pants, but occasionally her favorite jean midi skirt that was gifted to her by her mother. With that, she finds baggy pants and small glasses being less of a go-to. This fall, Mabel will be seen wearing boots and Sambas frequently. Her biggest inspirations for all of this include Sky Fereira, Cory Kennedy, and Jem from Jem and the Holograms. To make her fashion goals become a reality, Mabel does a lot of thrifting and sourcing for specifics online.
Mabel v.s. Kylee
While Kylee and Mabel have completely different styles, they have some essentials they agree on. This fall it seems that at least these two will both be wearing cozy cardigans and sweaters to keep them warm, as well as boots of any kind. These two come to a disagreement, however, when it comes to baggy pants. Kylee’s go-to is a baggy jean, while Mabel is slowly shifting baggier pants out of her current wardrobe. Besides those basics, the pair seem to be on different sides of trending fashion. While Mabel sees dirt and sleaze coming in, Kylee foresees a cleaner aesthetic staying trendy. The two friends will provide interesting contrast in the outfits they create moving towards these trends.
What's to be expected?
Without reasonable doubt, the biggest trends from Summer 2024 continue to be leopard prints, boots, cardigans, City bags, and a lot of 2000’s-style layering. But some items and styles that have seemed to surpass the usual lifetime of most trends that will continue to be big this fall are low-rise bottoms, baggy jeans, jerseys, bangles and chunky bracelets, North Face puffers, leg warmers, and boots yet again.
Moving on!
As fall transitions back into another brutal Michigan winter, some huge fashion changes await our campus. How will the students of the 2024-25 school year handle the oncoming snow with style?
